Indus Valley Civilization (mature phase, 2500-2000 BC), gold ornamental diskette, two wheel like symbol bevelled on obverse of diskette, to be strung into a necklace; 4.05g; 34.93mm.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
A large hoard of such diskettes was found in May 2000 at Mandi in Muzaffarnagar district, Western Uttar Pradesh. The hoard was contained in two bronze containers and included many varieties of spacer beads, hollow terminal beads, single and double bell-shaped beads, and thin circular diskettes, similar to this one. The technique and method of its manufacture are a testament to the skills and metallurgical knowledge of the Indus Valley Civilization.

The 'pulley'-type punch-marked coins are known chiefly from a small area near Wai, upstream Krishna River. These coins represent the earliest indigenous circulatory currency in the Deccan, to the South of the Vindhya Mountains. This group of coins, comprising four different denominations is testament to the advent of organized metallic currency systems further to the South. Possibly one of the earliest instances of such organized coinage, it is extremely important for Indian numismatics and monetary history.
