Sultans of Bengal - silver tanka of Jalal al-Din Mahmud (1287), Hadhrat Lakhnauti mint, date off flan, G&G B84, (listed as RR), 11.04g. Obv: Arabic legend al-Sultan al-'Azam Jalal al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Mahmud al-Sultan bin al -Sultan. Rev: Arabic legend in double rectangle al-Imam al-Musta'asim Amir al-Mumineen; date and mint details in margin.
Very fine, extremely rare.
Jalal al-Din Mahmud was an ephemeral Sultan who appears to have seized power for a year or two, immediately after the death of Balban who quelled the rebellion of Mu'izz al-Din Tughril. It is possible that he was a son of Tughril and for at least one year, his coins struck at Lakhnauti overlap with the issues of Nasir al-Din Mahmud alias Bughra Shah, the son of Balban, suggesting a struggle for power in which Bughra Shah emerged successful. Jalal al-Din Mahmud's coins are struck from 'land tax of Banga', i.e. Eastern Bengal and it is likely that he launched raids in the province to bring forth tribute to stabilize his rule.
