Sikh Empire, Duleep Singh (1843-1849 AD), silver rupee, Amritsar mint, fixed date VS 1885/moving date VS 1905, 'Ram' type, G. Singh 01.65.01; Herrli 01.12.04, 11.06g. Obv: 'Nanakshahi' couplet, version V; umbrella topping the holy name 'Ram' (written in Landah script) between 'Guru' and 'Gobind'; comb (kanghi) symbol below 'Singh'. Rev: 'Julus’ formula with Ber leaf symbol, rosette and crescent with cluster of dots to right.
Uncirculated, Very rare.
Landah was a running hand script used mainly by the mercantile classes in Punjab and Sindh. Herrli does not comment on the occurrence of the word 'Ram' on these coins; in all likelihood, such marks functioned as part of a control system in the mint but reflected on the religious affiliation of the mint contractors/workers.
