Sikh Empire, Ranjit Singh (1799-1839 AD), silver rupee, Amritsar mint, VS 1862, 'Ber Shahi' type, G. Singh 01.29.01; Herrli 01.13.04, 11.05g. Obv: 'Nanakshahi' couplet, version V: a beautiful ber leaf symbol below the word 'singh'. Rev: 'Julus' formula with bershahi leaf (double sprig) symbol and rosette symbol at left.
A pleasing specimen, Extremely fine, Very rare.
Coins of this type have been referred to as Morashahi due to the shape of the symbol on the reverse that resembles a peacock's tail. An article published in the JONS by Mr. Gurprit Singh says that they should be correctly referred to as Bershahi a name taken from its resemblance to a sprig of the Ber (Zizyphus jujuba).
