Tamil Nadu, copper double cash coin, most likely an issue of Nayakas of Gingee, (1600-1700 AD), unpublished in Ganesh or Mitchiner, 4.19g. Obv: Mythical double-headed anthropoid Garuda (Gandabherunda) running to right, crescent above, dotted border around. Rev: Emblematic representation of sword, banner and other royal attributes, Devanagari legend Ji(n)ji? to right.

Gandabherunda is a mythical two headed bird with infinite strength. Mythology narrates that Vishnu, in a continued fury took the form of Gandabherunda after the killing of Hiranyakashipu, father of Prahalada. Gandabherunda is first noticed in South India in about 11th century AD. On coins, it appears first on the Hoysala series and later on the Vijayanagar and Nayaka series.
