Rayalaseema, Upper Krishna Valley in Coastal Andhra Pradesh - lead coin of Maharathi Mahahathi (c.200-250 AD), 7.61g. Obv: elephant standing on pedestal facing right, Brahmi legend (Ma)harathisa Mahahathisa above. Rev: six-arched hill with crescent in centre, wavy line below and palm tree to right, all enclosed in a rectangular border.
Very fine, Very rare.
Coins of Maharathis of the 'Hathi' family were first discovered in excavations at Veerapuram. The Hathi Maharathis, pertinently for their name, struck coins in the elephant type. Mahahathi is known from less than five reported coins.
