Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra - uninscribed gold fanam attributed to Vishnuvardhana II Bittiga (1106-1152), K. Ganesh 'Karnataka' #8.21, 0.41g. Obv: representation of Rama, standing facing, holding a large bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. Rev: stylized lion facing right with crescent above.

The Hoysalas issued a series of gadyanas, fanams and quarter fanams (hagas), with representations of the ten incarnations (Avatars) of Vishnu. This particular variety depicts lord Rama, the seventh incarnation, identifiable with his main attributes: the bow and arrow. This is by far the only clearly identifiable solo depiction of Rama in South Indian gold coinage, hence its iconographic significance.
