Iran, Safavid dynasty, Isma'il I (1501-1524 AD), silver ½ shahi, struck to 1st Eastern standard, mint not clear, AH 90x, 4.59g. Counter-stamped on reverse with Adl Qandahar in pentagonal cartouche.
Fine, Rare.
In 1545, the city and fort of Qandahar was won by a joint Persian and Mughal army, after the exiled Mughal emperor Humayun was given asylum by Tahmasp I, the Safavid king. It is possible that older coins were counterstamped during or after the conquest when Qandahar remained nominally under Safavid, but practically in Mughal control.
