Independent Kingdoms
Auction Date: 10-08-2024
Silver
Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Peshwas - two silver rupees of 'Ankushi' type, struck in the name of 'Shah Ali Gauhar', the pre-accession name of Shah Alam II, Pune Mint, with Fasli dates 1225 and 1229 added in Arabic numerals above the 'Ankush' symbol on reverse, M&W T4a, 11.12g. and 11.13g.(2 coins)
Very fine, Very scarce.
Although Maheshwari & Wiggins list coins of this type as of Pune mint, find-spot evidence suggests they might have been struck somewhere in Ahmednagar district. Bhatodi, where there was a mint producing 'Ankushi' rupees, is a likely candidate.
