Peerkhani' rupees are derived from coins struck at Dicholi in Aurangzeb's name by the Sawants of Swantwadi, under permission from Abdul Rauf Khan, the Nawab of Savanur, also known as 'Peer Khan'. Rupees and ½ rupee of this sort are referred to as 'Shambhu Peerkhani' rupees owing to the additional mark of a shiva-linga on reverse. Maheshwari & Wiggins, for reasons unknown, have attributed these coins to the 'miscellaneous and unattributed' category. But the attribution of this variety to Chikodi is pretty certain based on find-spot evidence. The mint was operated by a minor Desai family.
