Copper
Gupta Empire - copper coin of Kumara Gupta I (c.415-450 AD), 'Chhatra'-type, TOTGE p.335, 6.08g. Obv: king standing facing left, with a midget attendant in gesture of holding a royal umbrella over his head. Rev: anthropoid Garuda facing, Brahmi legend Maharaja Shri Kuma… below.
Good very fine, Exceedingly rare.
Copper coins of Gupta emperors are rare and those of Kumara Gupta particularly so. The choice of the type reveals an unusual relationship with a coin of a different metal (gold) and while 'Chhatra'-type gold coins of Chandra Gupta II are fairly numerous, those of Kumara Gupta are exceedingly rare.
