These coins were probably struck under the authority of Nawabs of Rajahmundry and Srikakulam who was feudatory to the Nizam of Haidarabad, during a period of uncertainty following the death of Nizam ul-Mulk Asaf Jah I in 1749. Sikakul, or Srikakulam, was a thriving port city on the eastern coast, benefitting from trade between Bengal and the Coromandel Coast and also transoceanic trade with Burma and the Dutch East Indies.
