The village of Dhamoni is located in Banda tehsil of Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh. It was a strategic stronghold securing the North-South route in Mughal times and a seat of a provincial Mughal officer. In the 18th century the area became a hotbed of military and political activities involving the Mughal subahdars of Malwa, the Bangash Nawabs, the Bundelas and the Marathas. In the second decade of the Muhammad Shah's reign, when this coin was struck, a major tussle ensued between Chhatrasal Bundela and Bahlol Khan the Mughal commander of Malwa. Chhatrasal pushed Bahlol Khan towards Dhamoni and occupied it. It is possible that coins were struck here around this time to fund the campaign.
