Post-Mauryan tribal republics, Yaudheyas or Kunindas - copper coin struck in the name of 'Chitreshwara' as tutelary deity of the clan (c.50BC-50AD), not listed in PAIC, 8.16g. Obv: Three-headed Shiva seated frontally on an Āsana, holding a staff, with an attendant standing to right and a kneeling figure at his feet. Rev: Standing human figure, partly seen with a deer facing left next to it.
Very fine, Very rare.
The attribution of this type is contested - A M Shastri regards it to be a Kuninda issue but Devendra Handa suggests a Yaudheya attribution. Pieper in his catalogue follows Handa and attributes them to the Yaudheyas. Coins of this type are very rare and known from a single hoard, which appeared in the early 1980s. Shastri identifies the kneeling figure as the Apasmara-purusha motif associated with Shiva's iconography. All coins listed by Pieper, following Handa, show a large deer facing a small human figure on reverse. However, on this coin this order is reversed, thus it is a new type in this rare series.
