Ancient Marathwada - die-struck inscribed coinage of post-Mauryan period, (c.200-150 BC), unattributed coin in the name of River Godavari, unlisted in PAIC, 1.81g. Obv: female deity standing facing with one hand raised and the other akimbo, triangle-headed standard to right, Swastika to left and wavy line below; Brahmi legend Siri Gola to left. Rev: tree with large leaves in railing.
Very fine, Very rare.
Gola' is well-known as a name of the River Godavari from texts like the Gahasattasai that are ascribed to the Satavahana period. Coins with human depiction of river Bena are well-known and this adds another type struck in a deified river's name to that repertoire.
