Gupta Empire, copper coin of Chandra Gupta II (c.375-415AD), Malwa region, 'vase' type, PAIC 3552, 0.70g. Obv: Vase of plenty (Kalasa) with decorative tassels hanging out from the spout. Rev: Brahmi legend Chandra in ornate letters with crescent above.
Good very fine, Very rare.
Chandra Gupta II conquered Malwa from his rebellious brother Rama Gupta towards the end of 4th century. His minister Chhagalaga mentions in an inscription at Vidisha that he had come here with his master who wanted to 'win over the entire World'. His coinage in Malwa is based on the light-weight standard popularized by the Naga dynasty of Padmavati.
