Post-Mauryan tribal republics - Yaudheyas or Kunindas, copper coin struck in the name of 'Chitreshwara' as tutelary deity of the clan (c.50 BC-50 AD), PAIC 1643, 10.51g. Obv: Shiva seated frontally on an Asana, with a knealing figure at his feet; traces of Brahmi legend around. Rev: Deer facing right, partly visible.
Good Very fine, Extremely rare.
The attribution of this type is contested - A M Shastri regards it to be a Kuninda issue but Devdendra Handa suggests a Yaudheya attribution. Pieper in his catalogue follows Handa and attributes them to the Yaudheyas. Coins of this type are very rare and known from a single hoard, which appeared in the early 1980s. Shastri identifies the knealing figure as the Apasmara-purusha motif associated with Shiva's iconography.
