Auction Date: 26-12-2021
Copper
Satavahanas - alloyed copper coin of Siri Satakani (c.100-50 BC), an unpublished Western Maharashtra type, 9.68g. Obv: tree-in-railing to left; a three-arched hill to right with a wavy line with fishes (river symbol) emanating from it, and a triangle-headed standard on the riverbank. Rev: 'Ujjain' symbol with crescent on one orb in centre; Brahmi legend Ra…Satakanisa around, with small symbols interspersed between letters.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
The depiction of river streaming out of a hill might represent a stylistic way to suggest the source of River Godavari near Nasik. The placement of a standard on its bank might refer to a performance of a sacrifice along the river.
