Ancient India
Auction Date: 16-10-2021
Copper
Ancient Malwa, post-Mauryan die-struck coinage, Ujjain/Maheshwar region - copper coin of 'female bust' type, (c.100-50 BC), AICR 790-791 (wrongly attributed to the Cheras), 2.65g. Obv: A female bust wearing ear ornaments and hair bun in a Greco-Roman style. Rev:Lion jumping to right (partly visible).
Very fine, Very scarce.
The bust on the obverse bears a close resemblance with the bust of Cleopatra VII (50-30 BC). We know of other Hellenistic types bearing portraits from Malwa like the issues Vijayamitra and this type adds an interesting dimension to the import of Hellenism into Malwa in first century BC.
