Gupta Empire - gold dinar of Chandra Gupta II (c.375-415 AD), 'Archer' type, not listed in Altekar, S. Kumar Var. 'R', 8.00g. Obv: Nimbate and bare-bodied king, holding a strung bow in one hand and an arrow in the other, with Garuda standard in the background and a 'Sun/ lotus' symbol to its right; Brahmi legend Chandra below king's arm holding bow. Rev: Nimbate goddess Lakshmi seated cross-legged on a lotus, with a lotus in one hand and a noose in the other; Brahmi legend Shri Vikkramah to the right and Tamgha to left.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
S. Kumar attributes the coins with additional 'sun / lotus' symbols are attributed to Chandra Gupta II as they largely fall within the weight standards of that ruler. However, heavier coins with similar extra symbols in the obverse left field are attributed to later rulers like Chandra Gupta III / IV. Pankaj Tandon believes that these are issues of Puru Gupta. Altekar does not list this variety, but describes a similar coin (with Chakra instead of the lotus on obverse) as var. C in Class II.
