Akbar (1556-1605 AD), silver rupee, Shahr Anharwala Patan mint, AH 984, 11.30g. Obv: Shahada in dotted rectangle, names and titles of Rashidoons around. Rev: Full name of the Emperor in mihrab-shaped dotted cartouche; mint-epithet 'Dar al-Zarb' in the right margin and mint-name below.
Very fine, Extremely rare.
Akbar completed his first conquest of Gujarat in 1573 with the provincial capital based at Ahmedabad. However, for the first few years of Mughal rule, other mints in the province namely Malpur and Patan, a.k.a. Anhilwara (known to Mughal historians by its Islamic variant name 'Anharwala' or 'Nahrwala'), produced coins so that the new regime could achieve effective assimilation of the newly acquired province into the Mughal monetary system. The products of these mints also served to produce money for Mughal troops of occupation and further conquest into Kathiawad.
