Post-Mauryan localized punch-marked coinage, Karshapana series, debased silver coin of Mathura region, (250-200 BC), unlisted in GH, 3.46 g. Obv: Five punches - 1. Sun, 2. Six-armed symbol, 3. Characteristic 'Mathura' tree, 4. Small human figure riding over a bull, 5. Stylized representation of Balarama, carrying a plough and a club. Rev: Small single punch of man standing with staff and water-pot.
Extremely fine, Rare.
This series of local punch-marked coins most likely catered for the urban economy of Mathura in the immediate post-Mauryan aftermath. The coins show recognizable depictions of Hindu gods, which might be the earliest such portrayals in Indian coinage.
