Auction Date: 19-12-2020

Akbar (1556-1605 AD), silver rupee, Sharifabad mint, AH 990, 11.37g. Obv: Full name of emperor and AH date, mintname in bottom margin. Rev: Shahada, floral symbol in centre. Unpublished in major sources.
Very fine, Extremely rare.
Sharifabad was the alias of either Birbhum or Varddhaman in West Bengal. The region was conquered by Akbar during his first conquest of Bengal and used as a launchpad for subsequent campaigns to conquer the Eastern parts of the province. Coins of Sharifabad mint are extremely rare with only a very few specimens known, most of them with truncated and barely readable mintnames. On this specimen the mintname can be convincingly restructured.
