Auction Date: 19-12-2020
Copper
Ancient Himachal Pradesh/Uttaranchal, Bhanuvarma, (150-200 AD), fractional copper coin, 0.71g. Obv: Ten-arched hill, Brahmi legend …Bhanuva… below. Rev: Tree-in-railing.
Very fine, Very rare.
Bhanuvarma appears to have been from a group of rulers ruling a small kingdom to the West of Almora in the NE Haryana/South Himachal Pradesh/E Uttaranchal area. The coins are stylistically and palaeographically dated to mid to late 2nd century AD and it is likely that the area seceded from Kushan rule after the reign of Huvishka.
