Lot No.187
AUC37
Ancient India
Auction Date: 19-12-2020
Copper
Post-Kushan 'Kota Kula' coinage of Punjab/Haryana, unattributed copper coin, late series, (300-400 AD), 4.96g. Obv: Nandi bull seated recumbent, facing left. Rev: Kalasha or vase of plenty in centre, below an inverted trident; Brahmi letter Ru to left and (Dra) to right. Unpublished in MAC.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The coin is an interesting variety of 'Kota' coins, where the usual Brahmi monogram Kota in centre is executed as to resemble a vase and trident. This is most likely a later feature when the deployment of the monogram had lost its original purpose.
