Auction Date: 18-08-2012
Silver
East India Co., Bombay Presidency, 'Transitional' period, Nasik mint, ½ Rupee, in the name of Shah Alam II, dated FE1241, 'Flag to left' mint mark, 5.54gm.
Very Fine +, Very Rare.
It is not certain which calendar the mint at Nasik follows – Hijri or Fasli. But both ways the coin post-dates the collapse of the Maratha Confederacy in 1818. It is known from archival sources that the British kept the mint at Nasik running from 1819 to 1834. It was closed soon afterwards in response to the launch of uniform coinage in 1835.
