Gupta Empire, gold dinar of Chandra Gupta II (375-415 AD), 'lion slayer' type, unlisted in Altekar and S. Kumar, flan crack skillfully restored, 6.99g. Obv: King standing facing left wearing a tunic, with a sword hanging by his waist, shooting an arrow with a strung bow towards a lion of equal proportions leaping at him, standing on his rear legs, traces of brahmi legend Naredrachandra Prathita Rano… to the right. Rev: Goddess seated in Sukhasana posture above the back of a majestic lion facing left, holding a lotus in one hand and a diadem in the other, brahmi legend Simhavikramah partly visible to the right and a tamgha in the left field.
Very fine, Extremely rare type.
This is by far one of the rarest varieties of the 'lion slayer' type of Chandra Gupta II. Kumar lists only one similar specimen (variety B.8, from the Chand Collection) but this coin differs from it in two significant ways, the lion on which the goddess sits faces to left, and there is a Tamgha on the reverse. These features make this coin unique and so far unpublished.
