Ananda' chieftains of Karnataka, 'elephant' type lead coin of Mulananda, (200-250 AD), unpublished in major sources, 6.29g. Obv: Majestic elephant standing facing left, three-arched hill between legs, traces of brahmi legend (lower part of the letter 'M') visible above. Rev: Six-arched hill flanked by two banners, with the tree emanating out of it's too.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The 'Ananda' chieftains rose to power in South- Central Karnataka after the decline of the Satavahanas in the region. The reverse motif of this coin bears similarity to the heavy lead coins struck by Kanha, the son of a Maharathi of the Sidaka family.
