Chhatrapati Shivaji (1674-1680 AD), gold 'Apranji' fanam, southern variety, M&W T1, 0.18g. Obv: Nagari legend (Shri) Raja Shiva. Rev: Three dots followed by Nagari legend Chhatra Pati.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
Towards the end of his reign Shivaji launched his famed 'Southern conquest' to settle disputes with his step-brother Venkoji of Thanjavur and to gain his share of their father's jagir lands. The fortress of Jinji became his principle seat, and remained a Maratha stronghold till it fell to the Mughals in early 1690s. The unusually low weight standard this coin was struck at was prevalent to the North of Jinji, in the territories of Southern Rayalaseema.
