Sultans of Kashmir, Fath Shah (AH 892-923, 1472-1517 AD), gold dinar, 11.27g, Kashmir mint, mule coin. Obv: Persian legend La ila il Allah Muhammad Rasul Allah in centre, with Hiza al dinar dar al saltanat Kashmir sanah 876 around. Rev: Persian legend Kibr e -mamlakat kih muhr (or Mihr) e-daulat ast, Sikkah e Fath Shah Sultan in Kashmir ast, that is “the glory of the kingdom, which is the stamp (or sun) of the state, is the coin of Fath Shah the Sultan in Kashmir” (GG K55 but mule with K30).
Extremely fine with mint luster, Very rare.
Obverse die of earlier ruler Hasan Shah, and reverse die of Fath Shah. This is an example of Kashmir coinage where the obverse die of Hasan Shah dated 876 was used at least 16 years later by his successor Fath Shah. Such couplings have been observed in Kashmir coinage more than one time. This shows that the original strike was limited in number and that the die survived for several years. It also indicates strict control over the mint where old dies were preserved and used later.
