The Mughals under Aurangzeb captured Dharwad in 1685 when they absorbed the realms of the Adil Shahi Sultanate after sacking Bijapur. As the town was strategically located and an important trading market, the Mughals made their first foray here into striking coins on the Southern Indian 'Hoan' standard.
