The town and fortress of Belgaum was conquered in 1687 by the Mughals following the fall of the Bijapur Sultanate. It was renamed 'Azamnagar' after the Mughal prince, Shahzada 'Azam who was instrumental in surrender of the fort. Copper and silver rupees sporadically struck from RY33 are known for the mint. This is the first ever known Nisar of this mint, struck in RY49. The identifier for the mint is the visible letters 'Alif' and 'Ain' closely following each other which is a combination known only in writing of the word 'Azam'.
