Sultans of Bengal, silver tanka in the name of Iltutmish, Sultan of Delhi, struck by Ghiyath al-Din 'Iwad, second series (1225 AD), AH(6)22, G&G B38 (listed as RRR), 10.76g. Obv: Arabic legend al-Sultan al-Mu'azzam Shams al-Dunya wa al -Din Abu al-Muzaffar Iltutmish Sultani Yameen Khalifat Allah (Nasir) Amir al-Mumineen. Rev: Shahada in circle and Nasir Amir al-Mumineen below; date and month details in margin.
Very fine, Very rare.
The tankas of this type were struck by 'Iwad towards the middle of Iltutmish's reign in an attempt at proclaiming sovereignty. Iltutmish quelled the rebellion by marching into Bihar. A couple of years later, 'Iwad was killed by Iltutmish's son when he once again tried to assert his independence.
