Lot No.85
AUC31
Hindu Coins of Medieval India
Auction Date: 11-08-2018
Silver
Pandyas/Alupas, uninscribed silver fractional Kahavanu/Tara, not listed in major sources, 0.20g. Obv: a fish between lamp-posts. Rev: a pair of fish.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
It is plausible that the coin was issued either by Alupas or by the Pandyas of Uchchhangi, a local feudatory dynasty in Karnataka. There is also a good chance that it is a Tamil Pandya issue, as small fractional silver coins of the Cholas of similar denomination are known. However, since the coin is uninscribed, its exact attribution has to be kept in abeyance.
