Satavahanas, alloyed copper coin of Naganika and Siri Satakani (100-50 BC), MCSI vol. 1, no. 141, 10.06g. Obv: Brahmi legend Naganikaya inscribed vertically on a pillar surmounted by a horse; Swastika to left and Brahmi legend …kanisa around. Rev: 'Ujjain' symbol with Swastikas in each orb and Nandipadas in each quadrant, within a dotted rectangular border.
Very fine+, Extremely rare.
The coin is counterstruck on a 'seated lion'-type coin of SiriSatakani of the Junnar series. The undertype is clearly visible through its outlines on both obverse and reverse. Naganika was the first indigenous Queen to have struck coins in her name, jointly with her husband SiriSatakani. Famous for the dedicatory inscription in the Satavahana family temple at Naneghat, she is known to have performed several sacrifices, including two Ashwamedhas. The figure of the horse on top of the sacrificial pillar clearly alludes to this important Vedic sacrifice associated with universal kingship and conquest.
