Pandyas of the Sangam Age, copper coin of Peruvazhuti, a Pandya ruler of 200 BC, Krishnamurty 'Sangam Coins', nos. 9/10, 2.75g. Obv: horse facing left, railing like symbol to left; traces of Tamil-Brahmi legend …vazhuti visible above. Rev: stylized representation of fish composed of oblique lines.
About very fine, Extremely rare.
The coins with Tamil Brahmi legends are probably the earliest inscribed coins in South India. 'Peruvazhuti' refers to a Pandya king who, according to tradition, performed several Vedic sacrifices. His full name, as mentioned in songs of the Sangam literature, was Palyagasalai Mutukutumi Peruvazhuti.
