Satavahanas - lead 'bull'-type coin of Siri Satakani (100-50 BC), Newase-Paithan region, 17.72g. Obv: bull with tail curled above the hump, charging to right, small circular symbol below; Brahmi legend Raño Siri Satakanisa above. Rev: A composite symbol of Nandipadas inside a rectangle with arrows at four cardinal points, with more Nandipadas in quadrants.
Fine, Very rare.
This type of coin was adjudged by Dr. Shobhana Gokhale to represent the Vedic sacrifice of Vrshotsarja where a young bull was ceremoniously let free from agricultural labour. The symbol on the reverse is unique to this type of coins.
