The dynasty of Nikumbhas is known to have ruled in South Gujarat – Khandesh – North Maharashtra region on the evidence of four copper-plate grants. From these grants we learn that Bhanushakti was the founder of the family. Bhanushakti might have been invested by the Chalukya emperor Pulakesin II with the government of Southern Gujarat after the defeat of the Kalachuri king Buddharaja. His son was Adityasakti and the latter's son was Allashakti. Allashakti was ruling in 656AD. In his grant, Allashakti claims to have won royal rights and assumes the titles Prthivivallabha and Nikumbha. Allashakti's son Jayasakti also is called 'Nikumbha' in his Mundkhede copper-plates. The name survives as the present day 'Nikam' among the high-caste Marathas.
