Ancient India
Auction Date: 19-05-2018
Silver
Western Kshatrapas, Kshaharata dynasty, silver drachm of Nahapana (33-78 AD), Fishman 3.7, 2.15g. Obv: Bust of the ruler wearing flat cap and locks of hair on temples; traces of crude Greek legend to right. Rev: Dynastic emblem of thunderbolt and arrow; Kharoshthi legend Rano Kshaharata…. to left, Brahmi legend …Nahapanasa to right.
Very fine, Rare.
Nahapana coins of this variety have the arrow pointing downwards with respect to the Brahmi legend. Fishman notes “this is one of the rarest of the Nahapana's coins” and suggests that the reversal of the symbols was probably an unintentional mistake in die engraving.
