Princely States
Auction Date: 15-12-2017
Copper
Hyderabad, province of Berar (Elichpur) - anonymous 'tiger'-type paisa of mid-19th century, attributed to private mints proliferated under the Nizam's rule, with initials 'SP' on the reverse, 10.15g.
Very fine, Rare.
It is uncertain what the letters 'SP' mean and all sort of explanations circulate. Most likely it has some connection with Palmer & Co., a banking firm at Hyderabad, which controlled the province of Berar in lieu of advances made to the Govt. of the Nizam.
