Auction Date: 15-12-2017
Silver
Aurangzeb (1658-1707 AD), silver rupee, 'square areas' type, Dar al-Khilafat Shahjahanabad mint, AH1071/RY4, 11.40 g. Obv: in square Alamgir Badshah Ghazi; around, from left quadrant Abu al-Muzaffar Muhayyi al-Din Aurangzeb Bahadur Sanah 1071.Rev: mint-name in central square; 'Julus' formula with RY4 around.
Broad flan, Very fine, Extremely rare.
The date/RY combination reflects the 'corrected reckoning' of Aurangzeb's reign, fixed to 1 Ramzan AH 1068 by an imperial decree. The coin was thus struck between 20-4-1661 and 16-8-1661. This is the latest instance recorded for the 'square areas' type of Shahjahanabad mint, which in all probability is the rarest mint for the type.
