The Mughals fought a long-drawn battle against the Marathas during 1689-1700. The Maratha Chhatrapati Rajaram was besieged in Gingee. In 1698, the fort of Gingee fell to the Mughals. This coin was struck either in its aftermath, or before the fall, to finance the siege.
