Sultans of Bengal, Shams al-Din Iltutmish (1210-1235 AD), silver tanka, struck by Ghiyath al-Din 'Iwad, the governor of Bengal (1217-1220), AH 616?, Gaur / Lakor mint, G&G B19, 10.89g. Obv: horseman in central circle, mint-name above and below; Shahada and the date in words in the margins, preceded by Bi-Tarikh. Rev: Arabic legend al-Sultan al-Mu'azzam Shams al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Harith Iltutmish al-Qutbi Nasir Amir al-Momineen.
Very fine, Extremely rare.
G&G mention that the coin listed by them has 'a different, undetermined Kunya' for the king, instead of the usual Abu al-Muzaffar. On this coin, it is clearly seen to be Abu al-Harith ('Father of the lion'). Also, G&G make no mention of a dated coin in this type, whereas on this coin, the date is present and can be restructured to read 616.
