Vijayanagar Empire / Nayakas of Madurai, copper coin of Vishwanatha Nayaka (1529-1563 AD) as viceroy of Madurai, ruling on behalf of the titular Pandya king Chandrasekhara Parantaka, Ganesh 'Tamil nadu' no. 5.6, 2.66g. Obv: crescent and Tamil legend Viswanathan. Rev: vertical pair of fish, Tamil legend Pandiyan.

Vishwanatha Nayaka was sent by Achyuta Deva Raya, emperor of Vijayanagar to Madurai to repel the invasion of Veerasekhara Chola on the kingdom of the weak Pandya king. After defeating the Chola, Vishwanatha Nayaka installed the Pandya king on the throne and began his own rule as a viceroy. This coin must have been struck around this time. After the fall of Vijayanagar Empire, Vishwanatha Nayaka became independent and initiated the house of the Madurai Nayakas.
