Lot No.15
AUC29
Ancient India
Auction Date: 15-12-2017
Copper
Ancient Maharashtra, Marathwada / West Vidarbha region - inscribed die-struck coin of Bala(?)mitra, (c.200-150BC), unpublished in major sources, 2.38g. Obv: an 'Ujjain'-symbol with one orb modified with a crescent; Brahmi legend …(la?)mitasa around Rev: a tree-in-railing and a six-arched hill; traces of undertype, which include an animal.
Very fine+, Very rare.
The coin is evidently overstruck on a previous type. The symbols suggest a Satavahana orientation but the name of the ruler clearly ends in '-Mitra'. These two features of the coin may have a political bearing.
