Ancient Maharashtra, Marathwada / West Vidarbha region - inscribed die-struck coin of Bhumimitra, (c.200-150BC), unpublished in major sources, 2.83g. Obv: tree-in-railing flanked by three-arched hill and Shrivatsa to the right; Brahmi legend Bhumimitasa reading anticlockwise outwards above. Rev: bull walking to right, small 'Ujjain'-symbol above and traces of other symbols around.
Very fine+, Very rare.
The coins of a king named 'Bhumimitra' are known mainly from Malwa and in the inscribed
punch-marked series from East Vidarbha. The two might not be the same ruler, but this is the first instance of a 'Bhumimitra’ coin in the die-struck series from Maharashtra to have come to light. He could well be the same ruler who issued punch -marked coins further to the East.
