Rayalaseema, Upper Krishna Valley in Coastal Andhra Pradesh - lead coin of Maharathi Mahahathi (200-250 AD), 4.76g. Obv: Elephant walking to right, Brahmi legend Maharathisa Mahaha(thisa) above. Rev: Elaborate symbol with ten-arched hill in centre, wavy lines and Nandipadas on either side enclosed in a rectangular border.
Very fine, Very rare.
Coins of Maharathis of the 'Hathi' family were discovered for the first time in Veerapuram excavations. Alongside Mahahathi, other individuals such as KhadahariHathi, SivakhadaHathi and Pahalamasi were known from their coins. They are all very rare. The Hathi Maharathis, pertinently for their name, struck coins in the elephant type.
