East India Company
Auction Date: 12-08-2017
Copper
Madras Presidency, copper 10-cash, heavy weight 1803-issue, Pr 199, struck from a cancelled pair of dies with clear impressions of die cuts on both sides, 5.92g.
Very fine, Very Rare.
The copper coins of the 1803 series were struck at Birmingham by Matthew Boulton under contractual agreements. The dies for these coins were designed by John Philip, a young engraver. It was a common practice to cross the dies out when they were decommissioned and replaced. However, in this case, they appear to have been used to strike this coin even after cancellation which is a highly unusual and rare occurrence.
