According to Sarasan, the 'Anantharaya Varahan' was struck for the first time in Kollam Era 968 at Alleppey and subsequently at the Padmanabhapuram mint from KE976 onwards. This coin, with obverse design without lotus sprigs, is an extremely rare early variety of the Anantharaya Varahan coinage. It must have been struck over the reign of three issuers – Maharaja Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma (1758 -98), Avittam Thirunal Bala Rama Varma (1798-1810) and Rani Gouri Lakshmi Bayi (1810-1815). In 1815 (Kollam Era 990), a major change in the design was introduced in the reign of Rani Gouri Lakshmi Bayi, when lotus sprigs were added to either side of the obverse figure.
