Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi, arsenous copper coin of Satyashraya Pulakesin (545-565 AD), modelled on the Vishnukundin 'lion'-type, unlisted in major publications, 2.24g. Obv: Roaring lion facing right, small dagger in its front; Brahmi legend Satya above. Rev: A lotus flower in profile, placed above a wheel in axial view, flanked by two lamp stands, enclosed in a dotted circle.
Very fine+, Very rare.
Pulakesin I, also known as 'Satyashraya', founded the Chalukya dynasty of Vengi after installing his brother KubjaVishnuvardhana at Vengi. The prominentlyVaishnavite emblems on this coin suggest it was issued under Vishnuvardhana, in the name of the Chalukya Emperor.
